Omschrijving

In many countries, child marriage remains a horrific reality. This film offers a heartbreaking yet hopeful portrait of the struggle against it. Nawi was Kenya’s official submission for the 2025 Oscars.

Set in the remote, arid landscapes of Turkana (Kenya), the film tells the true story of 13-year-old Nawi, who discovers that her father intends to marry her off in exchange for livestock. Bound by tradition but determined to follow her own path, Nawi manages to escape on her wedding night. Pursued by her family, she flees to pursue her dream: attending secondary school. Her courageous fight against cultural norms becomes a powerful symbol of hope.

Nawi is a strikingly crafted story that sheds light on the issue of child brides. It portrays the clash between tradition and aspiration, with the young actress delivering a performance that embodies the struggles of countless girls worldwide. In the region where the film is set, one in four girls is married before reaching adulthood. According to UNICEF, there are an estimated 640 million child brides globally.
