It Was Just an Accident is an ensemble drama in which director Jafar Panahi, with restrained precision, exposes the frayed edges of human existence. Despite heavy censorship and production restrictions in Iran, Panahi once again succeeds in creating a film that is not only socially urgent but also cinematically powerful. His controlled direction, combined with an eye for detail and moral complexity, turns the film into a harrowing reflection on guilt and responsibility.

After an unexpected and tragic accident, the lives of several villagers become deeply entangled. As each of them struggles in their own way with grief, remorse, and misunderstanding, they are forced to confront the choices from their past that led them here. Panahi weaves these personal stories into a broader portrait of a community teetering on the edge between forgiveness and condemnation.

It Was Just an Accident premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was awarded the Palme d’Or.
