The movie
Sehnsucht in Sangerhausen
Four people in Germany long for a different life. In four interconnected chapters, Sehnsucht in Sangerhausen tells a story of social alienation.
Description
We all long, at times, for a life we never had. In Julian Radlmaier’s Sehnsucht in Sangerhausen, four people find themselves stuck in their own lives, each yearning for something different. Across four playful, melancholic chapters, their lives unexpectedly become intertwined.
A mysterious stone connects the lives of an East German waitress, an Iranian YouTuber, a Chinese tour guide and an aristocratic chambermaid from the eighteenth century. The stone passes into the hands of each of them, becoming a symbol of what they share: a longing for change. What begins as a series of seemingly disconnected encounters grows into a mosaic about loneliness and the question of how much freedom we really have to shape our lives as we wish.
As in his previous films, Julian Radlmaier refuses to be confined to a single genre. Sehnsucht in Sangerhausen is at once a love story, political satire, ghost story and melancholic comedy. From this unexpected combination emerges an idiosyncratic film about ordinary lives and quiet desires that rarely find a place in the grand narrative of history.
