Peau d’âne (re-release)
Enjoy this late summer retrospective of Jacques Demy (1931–1990), one of the most distinctive filmmakers of the French New Wave.
Description
When a princess is threatened with being forced to marry her own father, she flees the kingdom on the advice of her fairy godmother, hiding beneath the skin of a magical donkey. Disguised as a humble maid, she tries to build a new life until a prince discovers her true beauty.
For his first fairy-tale film, Jacques Demy adapted Charles Perrault’s famous story into an enchanting musical filled with fantasy, humour, and visual invention. Catherine Deneuve shines in the title role, alongside Jean Marais, Delphine Seyrig, and Jacques Perrin.
Featuring Michel Legrand’s sparkling score, extravagant costumes, and a world where magic and reality seamlessly intertwine, Peau d’âne became Demy’s biggest box-office success in France and a beloved classic for audiences of all ages.
