Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (re-release)
Enjoy this late summer retrospective of Jacques Demy (1931–1990), one of the most distinctive filmmakers of the French New Wave.
Description
Twin sisters Delphine and Solange dream of a life filled with love, art, and adventure beyond the quiet town of Rochefort. When a travelling fair arrives in town, new possibilities suddenly seem within reach. Unbeknownst to them, the characters continually cross paths, while their ideal romantic match may sometimes be just around the corner.
Following the international success of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Jacques Demy made his most exuberant musical. Starring Catherine Deneuve and her sister Françoise Dorléac, Danielle Darrieux, and Hollywood legend Gene Kelly, the film is a loving tribute to classic MGM musicals, reimagined in Demy’s own colourful style.
Michel Legrand’s swinging score, the choreography, and the playful use of coincidence make Les Demoiselles de Rochefort one of the most beloved film musicals of all time. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score.
