The movie
La baie des anges (re-release)
Enjoy this late summer retrospective of Jacques Demy (1931–1990), one of the most distinctive filmmakers of the French New Wave.
Description
Young bank clerk Jean discovers the seductive world of roulette during a visit to a casino. There he meets Jackie, a glamorous woman who lives entirely for the game, allowing her life to be governed by luck, loss, and the hope of the next big win. Together, they travel from casino to casino along the Côte d’Azur, where love and gambling addiction become increasingly intertwined.
Following his debut Lola, Jacques Demy made La baie des anges (Bay of Angels), one of his most mature and melancholic films. Set against the dazzling backdrop of Nice, Demy explores themes of chance, obsession, and desire—motifs that would continue to define his work. Jeanne Moreau gives one of her most memorable performances, while Michel Legrand’s subtle score lends the film an irresistible sense of melancholy.
