Jimpa

Jimpa is a sensitive and authentic drama about queer identity, parenthood, and the complex dynamics between three generations. Filmmaker Sophie Hyde (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) explores both biological and chosen family ties in this semi-autobiographical film, starring Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Father) and John Lithgow (Conclave, The Crown) in the lead roles.

Filmmaker Hannah (Olivia Colman) travels with her non-binary teenager Frances (Aud Mason-Hyde) to Amsterdam to visit her father Jim (John Lithgow). Frances affectionately calls him Jimpa and hopes to stay with him for a year. This confronts Hannah with her sense of parenthood and responsibility. Jim insists that Frances should explore queer life in Amsterdam. But he cannot escape the fact that the freedom he once sought in Amsterdam is not the same as that of his grandchild.

Jimpa was selected for the Sundance Film Festival and the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Alongside international stars, the film also features Dutch actors such as Hans Kesting, Romana Vrede, and Zoë Love Smith.
