The turbulent life of Goliarda Sapienza (1924–1996) recalls that of seventeenth-century Italian artists who only received recognition after their deaths. In Fuori, director Mario Martone presents a nuanced account of the life of this unconventional author, whose outlook was profoundly shaped by the women she met during her imprisonment in Rome in the 1980s.
Italian actress and writer Goliarda Sapienza was repeatedly rejected by publishers during her lifetime. She achieved recognition only after her husband posthumously published her provocative literary masterpiece, The Art of Joy. Her unconventional life is surrounded by an air of mystery, which the Neapolitan filmmaker Mario Martone draws upon to bring his portrait of Sapienza to life in Fuori. Martone focuses on Rome in the 1980s, during and after Sapienza’s five-day imprisonment in the Rebibbia prison, basing the film on her memoirs of that period.
