Description
Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) is the most famous film in Agnès Varda’s body of work. The film is a highlight of the French New Wave and is considered one of the most important films directed by a woman. On Thursday, March 12, film journalist Floortje Smit will give an introduction to the female director Agnès Varda before the screening of Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962).
The film follows singer Cléo (Corinne Marchand) as she wanders through bustling Paris, anxiously awaiting the results of a medical test. She is used to shaping herself according to the gaze of others: “As long as I am beautiful, I am alive.” But with each encounter, her perspective shifts; she gradually discovers her own voice and autonomy.
“A masterful portrait of a woman breaking free from imposed expectations. It is a timeless testament by Agnès Varda, who is only recently being fully recognized as the creator of the first French New Wave film, even before Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut.”
