Nothing more than a brief moment of eye contact is needed for the love between Fleur (Nina Meurisse) and Julian (Laurence Roothooft) to ignite. The two are head over heels in love—so why not get married right away? And if the love between two women is to be celebrated, why not say “I do” in every country in the world where same-sex marriage is legal? Fleur and Julian embark on “Project 22”: the title refers to the number of countries where (in 2017) marriage between people of the same sex is legal. But after only four ceremonies, their journey is abruptly cut short; the women are forced to halt their plans unexpectedly. The moving, true love story of Fleur and Julian—based on the book by Fleur Pierets—marks the feature directorial debut of Belgian filmmaker Cato Kusters. Julian had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and opened Film Fest Gent.
