The movie
Les Parapluies de Cherbourg
Enjoy this late summer retrospective of Jacques Demy (1931–1990), one of the most distinctive filmmakers of the French New Wave.
Description
Young Geneviève helps her mother run an umbrella shop in Cherbourg and is deeply in love with Guy, a car mechanic. Their future seems certain until Guy is called up for military service in Algeria. During his absence, circumstances force Geneviève to make a life-changing decision. When Guy returns, it becomes clear that time has irrevocably changed things.
With Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg), Jacques Demy made film history. Every line of dialogue is sung to Michel Legrand’s music, creating a fully sung-through musical that remains, at its heart, a deeply moving and realistic love story. Catherine Deneuve rose to international fame with her leading role, and the film won the Palme d’Or at the 1964 Cannes Film Festival. It also received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Score.
A stunning 4K restoration allows Demy’s explosion of colour and music to shine once again.
