Description
Eagles of the Republic is the latest film by Tarik Saleh (Cairo Conspiracy), in which a celebrated actor becomes entangled in the power games of Egypt’s elite. In this political thriller, Saleh turns his attention to the film industry as one of the power centers of contemporary Egypt, where propaganda and vanity become inseparable.
George Fahmy (Fares Fares), Egypt’s biggest movie star, is pressured into portraying President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in a state-sponsored propaganda biopic. Reluctantly accepting the role, George soon finds himself drawn into the highest circles of power. As he becomes ensnared in a web of corruption, paranoia, and temptation, he is forced to confront a fundamental question: how much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice in order to survive?
Eagles of the Republic was selected for the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival and was Sweden’s official submission for the Academy Awards. In Saleh’s adopted home country, the film won six Guldbagge Awards—the Swedish film industry's highest honors—including Best Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Film.
