Documentary filmmaker Ton van Zantvoort follows how newcomers navigate the “Klantreis Inburgering” (Civic Integration Journey) program of the municipality of Breda.

As of January 1, 2022, the new Civic Integration Act came into effect, making municipalities responsible for the integration of newcomers. To help them find their way in Dutch society, the municipality of Breda developed the “Klantreis Inburgering” program. Newcomers receive guidance from various institutions on housing, finances, language, culture, and finding work. They are supported by local residents who act as buddies.

Filmmaker Ton van Zantvoort follows several newcomers on their “journey,” revealing just how complex Dutch society is organized. Can we expect newcomers to adapt to a society that has increasingly become a labyrinth, even for those born here? Van Zantvoort spent four years creating this darkly comedic look at a system where good intentions clash with bureaucratic counters and rules.
