Jesus Christ Superstar

Film with introduction & Easter lunch

Jesus Christ Superstar | Sunday, April 5 | Introduction 11:00 AM | Film starts 11:15 AM | Lunch 1:00 PM

Jesus Christ Superstar is a rock opera that tells the final chapter of Jesus’ life—from his arrival in Jerusalem to his crucifixion. The story follows Jesus during his last days, as his growing popularity inspires both admiration and fear among the people and religious leaders.

The musical, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics), combines the biblical story with modern rock music and powerful emotions, and has become one of the most famous rock musicals ever created.

About the introduction by theologian Dr. Ralf Bodelier

The film will be introduced by theologian Dr. Ralf Bodelier, who was deeply impressed when he saw it at age 12 upon its release. He highlights the film’s distinctive character, which lies not only in its compelling rock music or Mary Magdalene’s love song.

Unlike most films about Jesus, director Norman Jewison frames the story of Jesus’ final week through a group of hippie actors. They arrive exuberantly by bus in the Negev Desert, unpack their props, and reenact the famous story. After the crucifixion, they appear shaken, board the bus again, and return to the inhabited world. Why did Jewison choose this approach? What was he trying to say, and why is it so important?
