Was Marielle Weiss

Together with their daughter Marielle, Julia and Tobias lead a comfortable life. They have a beautiful home and successful careers, but both parents also harbor their own secrets. After an incident at Marielle’s school, their happy family life takes a drastic turn: Marielle suddenly appears able to see and hear everything her parents do—even behind closed doors. The consequences are awkward, hilarious, and painful. Little by little, the small lies and tensions within her parents’ marriage are brought to light.

German director Frédéric Hambalek got the idea for the film after seeing a baby monitor with a built-in camera. Reflecting on the lack of privacy in our society, he wondered what would happen if it were not parents surveilling their children, but the other way around. Was Marielle Weiss was nominated for the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
