Description

How to Read a Film?
Analyze a layered film together with writer and book reviewer Lidewijde Paris, and discuss the literary aspects of cinema. The first film in this brand-new series is As It Is in Heaven.

What is the function of a film’s title?
Which camera perspectives are used, and why?
What can we read “between the lines” of a dialogue?
Which metaphors can we find in the story?

And how does the film guide our emotions?

With enthusiasm and humor, Lidewijde bounces back and forth with the audience about meanings, interpretations, and emotions. Before the screening, she gives you a few viewing tips, so that afterwards she can go step by step with the audience into a conversation about the story and how it is told. Where relevant, she draws connections to literary techniques and gives examples from well-known novels.

As It Is in Heaven follows world-famous conductor Daniel Daréus, who, after a heart attack, returns to his childhood village in northern Sweden to recover. When he encounters the local choir, he feels compelled to take them under his wing.
