Furniture maker and architect Gerrit Rietveld did not build for eternity. Yet the iconic Rietveld Schröder House will exist for exactly a century in 2024. Why do buildings like this retain their eloquence?
The first house Gerrit Rietveld designed for and with his beloved and creative partner Truus Schröder was an experiment. Although Rietveld thought his houses should be demolished after half a century at most, this iconic building was actually thoroughly restored. That these and other Rietveld houses – in the form as Rietveld originally envisioned them – are preserved for the future is thanks to the current residents, who lovingly and carefully restore and maintain their homes to this day. The film explores Rietveld's work from the perspective of Truus' love for him and his work, as documented in an audio interview from 1982 and in interviews with her close relations. This film will be screened together with ‘After the Future’.
